How one woman’s yard sign became a rallying cry for allies

It was a cold night in November 2016 when I first saw the sign.
Long runs in the winter darkness were my response to post-election anxiety. Music both angry (DJ Shadow’s Nobody Speak) and somber (Leonard Cohen’s You Want It Darker) provided the soundtrack as I chewed over the president-elect’s racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, fact-denying rhetoric. So many groups of people would be vulnerable in the next four years. In the coming battles to protect them, where did we start? And how could we tell who was on our side?
As if by magic, the answer appeared in a well-lit yard: A 26-word statement rendered in colorful letters on a black background. “In this house we believe,” it began, followed by this concise summary of allyship: “Black Lives Matter. Women’s rights are human rights. No human is illegal. Science is real. Love is love. Kindness is everything.”  Read more…More about Black Lives Matter, Social Good, Politics, and Activism

Autonomous zones like CHAZ have a long history. We need more of them.

If Fox News were our only source of reporting on Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, which sprung up last week as part of the ongoing nationwide protests against police brutality, we’d all be terrified out of our minds. The Murdoch-owned  channel has gone out of its way to demonize CHAZ — Photoshopping images of one dude with an AR-15 all over its coverage, misusing photos of buildings that were burning elsewhere, even mistaking a Monty Python skit for disagreement within CHAZ ranks.
Luckily, this is 2020 — and the same culture of smartphones that brought police killings to light in the first place can also be applied to misunderstood zones of protest. Here, let’s take a walk through CHAZ’s six square blocks of police-free anarchy. Note the families with strollers, the bikes, the free burgers, the $6 hot dogs, the voter registration booths. Note the lack of guns, ID checks at the barriers, or anything that feels remotely threatening. Read more…More about History, Social Good, Politics, and Activism

Nextdoor is next: Why the social network of systemic racism is ripe for change

It took two weeks of explosive, transformative national upheaval on race and policing before the head of America’s hyperlocal social network finally took a stand.
“Let me say it unequivocally,” Nextdoor CEO Sarah Friar said in a statement sent to millions of members in 200,000 U.S. neighborhoods Thursday. “Racism has no place on Nextdoor.”
NEXT STORY:
To which critics shot back: Has she been on Nextdoor lately? Or, indeed, ever?
Cases of racial profiling on the service  — the classic curtain-twitching posts about “sketchy” Black men — were showcased as early as 2015, by Splinter and Seattle Magazine; both reports focused on supposedly liberal neighborhoods. The New York Times found similar cases in 2016. After Nextdoor unveiled its big fix to Wired a year later (two attributes on top of race were now required when reporting suspicious incidents), local activists said profiling hadn’t stopped — the company had just lost interest in responding to their concerns.  Read more…More about Black Lives Matter, Racism, Nextdoor, Racial Justice, and Social Good

How to organize a protest clean-up, wherever you live

A few days after protests started in Washington D.C. against systemic racism and the police killing of George Floyd, Diego Garces joined in.
But after seeing empty water bottles, face masks, hand sanitizer packets, and gloves littering the streets, he wanted to do more than just march. Since then, Garces has cleaned up trash left behind by protesters on the newly-named Black Lives Matter Plaza, located in front of the White House, and surrounding blocks. He’s also recruited other people to help him. He supports those calling for justice for Floyd, who died after an officer kneeled on his neck for nearly 9 minutes, and cleaning up is just another way to show how much he cares.  Read more…More about Social Good, Clean Up, George Floyd Protests, Racial Justice, and Social Good
